Trinity Summary REL 230

Comments:

Great explanation with good details! Good analogy, too!

4/10/22

Submit a paragraph that explains the Christian idea of the Trinity. Explain all three elements of the Trinity as well as how each relates to the others. Also, provide an analogy for the Trinity.

Christian believe that the Trinity is the divine power of God expressed through three entities, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Trinity describes God as three in one, each with their own function or purpose. God the Father is the creator and everything in existence depends on Him. God the Son is fully divine and fully human. He was the one sent to earth to serve as a sacrifice for humankind for their salvation. God the Holy Spirit represents the spirit of God acting in the world and allows man to feel and interact with God. According to the Nicene Creed God the Father has always been, God the Son came from God but was not made. God the Holy Spirit came from God the Father according to the Eastern Church and from God the Father and Son according to the Eastern Church.

My imperfect analogy comes from the Apple Plus show Foundation, based on the Foundation books by Isaac Asimov. In the show there are three leaders of the Galactic Empire. There is Brother Dusk, Brother Day, and Brother Dawn. They are all clones of the original leader Cleon. Each Brother is genetically the same but they all serve different roles amongst each other and for their empire. Like the Trinity they are all the same but with different duties and characteristics of the same being.

RELS 221 Western Religion Paper 1

Celeste Jackson 9/19/22 RELS 221 Western Religion  What parallels can you draw between Native American and African religious resistance movements? There are many similarities and parallels between Native American and African Religions. Both groups view the spiritual world and everyday life as one and the same with no separation between them. Both believe in a high God that is mostly removed from daily life and they instead interact with spirits, or ancestors for direct help. They both also viewed the earth as a resource to use respectfully and not to abuse. Native Americans and Africans both faced colonial development and encroachment in their respective regions. The Native American lands in the West were being colonized by European-Americans and in Africa, where Tanzania is located today, the land was being controlled by the Germans.  In response to the encroachment and abuse of the people and the land, resistance movements began to form. Religion 100 Intro to Religion Discussion Posts

Chapters 1-2: Studying Religion I liked the authors version of the quote by George Bernard Shaw, "We never doubt that we know what it is-until, of course, we start thinking about it" (page 4).  On page 8 Livingston proposed his "working definition of religion" as such, "Religion is that system of activities and beliefs directed toward and in response to that which is perceived to be of sacred and transforming power." In my own words I would say it is doing things and believing in something you believe to hold special power so that you can obtain a desired result. This could be living a certain way to stay in a deities good graces or performing a specific act to reach a higher level of consciousness.  The approached that interested me is sociology. The sociological approach "focuses its attention on  social  behavior and the way in which religion interacts with other dimensions of our social experience" (page 22). This can help us understand how...
